Phyllostachys nigra is renown for it's black culms. New culms emerge green but slowly age to black within the first year or two. The combination of beautiful green leaves and black culms provide a stunning contrast in all four seasons. Black bamboo is probably the most popular ornamental bamboo here in North America. A mid sized bamboo, it is great for screening the typical two story house. It is an invasive bamboo so containment is required to limit the spreading.
