Native to China, Phyllostachys bambusoides is one of the largest temperate bamboos. Only Phyllostachys Edulis (Moso) grows larger. However, here in the Pacific Northwest, it will not reach the proportions it does in it's native environment. Also known as 'Madake', it is the most widely harvested bamboo in Japan. The combination of straight, strong and thick culms make it ideal for construction. The smooth culms are emerald green with large drooping leaves. Due to it's towering size, it is recommended for large gardens or lots.
