Acer palmatum 'Ryu Sei' is a beautiful pendulous Japanese maple that exhibits star shaped leaves on each branch. Translated from Japanese 'Ryu Sei' means 'Shooting Star'. This description is very fitting as the pendulous branches form a trail of star shaped leaves. Ryu Sei is naturally a low growing cascading shrub. If not staked, the branches will touch the ground and eventually become ground cover. To accentuate the branch form, 'Ryu Sei' is commonly grafted onto a tall standard which gives nice height and allows the 'shooting star' leaves to flow nicely downward.
Acer palmatum 'Ryu Sei' makes an amazing specimen for a tall planter that allows the stunning leaves to cascade down to the bottom. Or off a balcony where it can form a cascading waterfall of star shaped leaves. Fall brings on orange and red to the leaves. 'Ryu Sei' forms a low growing, wide shrub and will grow to 3' tall in 10 years. However, if staked properly it can grow much taller.
Acer palmatum 'Ryu Sei' is also sold and named 'Ryusen' (Flowing Waters) which is an incorrectly applied name as per 'The International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants' and also based from the recorded history of this plant.
