Pinus densiflora 'Burke's Red Variegated' is a Japanese red pine that has bright green and yellow banded needles. This variegation becomes more prominent into summer and holds it's color fairly well year round. One of the most impressive of the variegated pines. It is a fairly upright and graceful grower. If pruned or shaped well, this pine can be extremely ornamental with its amazing colors. Best suited for a larger growing area or garden.
This cultivar is a form of Oculus Draconis pine. Also known as a 'Dragon's Eye' pine. When looking into the center of a branchlet, the dark center surrounded by the outward growing pine needles resembles a dragon eye.
Burke's Red Variegated' was discovered as a seedling from Oculus Draconis by Joe Burke of Merrick, New York. Although both look quite similar, 'Burke's Red Variegated' tends to have brighter yellow needles.
