Bamboo News & Updates
The Golden One
April 2018 - By popular demand, Phyllostachys aureosulcata 'Aureocaulis' (Golden Crookstem Bamboo) is now available.
Phyllostachys aureosulcata 'Aureocaulis' is famous for its stand out feature of stunning golden canes. Combined with it's evergreen emerald green leaves, it provides an amazing backdrop for any garden or yard. The glowing, upright canes draw attention to those darker corners of your garden. Use it as a green screen to provide that much needed privacy between your neighbor or to cover up that bare looking fence or wall. For those with rock gardens, it is an amazing compliment to add that extra 'Zen'. Our current crop is only available in 5gal (12"x12") pot sizes. They stand a staggering 8' tall (2.4m) with 2-3 canes each pot.
Phyllostachys aureosulcata 'Aureocaulis' is a running bamboo so it has invasive root systems. If you are planting in the ground, we highly recommend using bamboo barrier or some form of containment. Below are the general specifications when planted in the ground here in the Canadian Pacific Northwest.
- Height: 20 - 30 feet (6.1 - 9.1m)
- Max. Diameter: 2" (5cm)
- Hardiness: -18°C (0°F)
- USDA Zone: 6b
- Light: Full Sun
Optionally, Phyllostachys aureosulcata 'Aureocaulis' can also be planted in some nice ornamental pots or planters. This way, invasive roots in your yard are not a concern. See our section on Bamboo In Containers. We get many questions about how tall these bamboos will get in a pot?? Well... this all depends on the size of your planter/pot. The bigger the pot, the taller the bamboo. Here is a good guideline but keep in mind other factors can affect dimensions too (ie. sunlight, soil type, water, etc.)
- 5gal (~12"D x 12"H): 6 - 8' feet (1.8 - 2.4m)
- 10gal (~15"D x 15"H): 8 - 12' (2.4 - 3.7m)
- 25gal (~22"D x 22"H): 12 - 15' (3.7 - 4.6m)
Note: D = Diameter, H = Height
