This month, we would like to showcase one of the best choices for a timber bamboo... Phyllostachys rubromarginata. Also known as the 'Red Margin Bamboo', new shoots have a red margin, hence the name rubro (red) marginata (margin). Red Margin Bamboo has an amazing tolerance for colder weather. Its fast rate of growth is well suited for those seeking a bamboo grove or screen fast. Sturdy, upright culms and emerald green foliage make this bamboo an amazing backdrop for a screen or ornamental purposes.

Great Green Screen - Culms grow fairly straight and upright, showcasing a tidy vertical appeal. New canes emerge a pee green. Over time the culms slowly age to varying tones of green and yellow. Grown in the ground, this bamboo can reach heights of 30-40' (9-12m) here in the Pacific Northwest. This creates a screen that is taller than your average 3 story house. Culms typically reach 2" (5cm) in diameter.

Exceptional Cold Hardiness - It is hardy to -20°C (-5°F). More than perfect for any wintery condition here in the greater Vancouver area. Bring on the wind chill!!

Loves Sun - Similar to most timber bamboos, Phyllostachys rubromarginata will thrive best with full sun exposure. Full sun will give taller growth, thicker canes and more lush, beautfiul foliage. Can tolerate shadier areas but growth rates and attributes will be affected.

This year's availability of Phyllostachys rubromarginata were propagated from larger, established groves. This gives these bamboos thicker, taller culms that you wouldn't typically get when grown from a pot. With a wopping 8-10' tall culms, you would typically see this kind of height in 10gal or 15gal plants. This current crop is only available in limited supplies so shop early for the best selection of plants. Spring is the perfect time to plant these beauties. Phyllostachys rubromarginata is currently available in 5gal sizes. Who wouldn't want 10gal height plants for the price of 5gal!?
