Bamboo News & Updates
Featured Bamboo - Fargesia robusta
This month, we would like to showcase one of our most popular bamboos at the nursery... Fargesia robusta 'Campbell'. This bamboo may not have the 'awe' inspiring towering heights of a timber bamboo but it does possess many qualities that other bamboos do not have. As a matter of fact, it may seem to be the perfect bamboo to some. It grows to a moderate height so its perfect for your average screen. Very upright culms. It has a non-invasive root system. Exceptional cold hardiness. Both sun and shade tolerance. I think that pretty much covers any environment here in the Pacific Northwest.
Great Green Screen - The culms grow fairly straight and upright so it will have somewhat of a tidy vertical appeal. New canes emerge an emerald green with culm sheaths that produce a checker board pattern. Over time the culms slowly age to varying tones of green and yellow. Grown in the ground, this bamboo can reach heights of 12-15' (4-5m) here in the Pacific Northwest. This creates a screen taller than your average one storey building.
Exceptional Cold Hardiness - Native to the Sichuan province of China, Fargesia robusta grows at elevations of 3900 to 9200 feet (1200 to 2800m) so it is naturally use to cold climates. It is hardy to -18°C (0°F). More than perfect for any condition here in the greater Vancouver area. Bring on the wind chill!!
Clumping Bamboo - Fargesia robusta 'Campbell' has a non-invasive root system. New growth always emerges around the circumference of the main grove. It's clumping characteristic makes it's growth habit predicatable. This makes maintenance that much easier. Unlike a running bamboo, you won't need to be concerned about random new culms growing in random spots all over your garden.
Shade & Sun Tolerant - In it's natural growing environment, Fargesia robusta typically grows on the easterly slopes giving it morning sun and afternoon shade. Although this condition will give the most optimum growth, Fargesia robusta thrives almost as well in full sun. It's tolerance of both shade and sun makes it very versatile for many garden and landscape conditions.
Excellent Container Bamboo - Grows moderately tall with minimal space requirements making it perfect for planters on balconies and patios. It's root system is not as aggressive as running bamboos so therefore it can last much longer in planters before needing to be repotted or divided.
The versatility of this bamboo makes it very ideal for the everyday landscape in the Pacific Northwest. With the combination of all these desirable traits, Fargesia robusta 'Campbell' has solidified it's reputation as winner when choosing a bamboo for your balcony, patio or yard.
This year's availability of Fargesia robusta 'Campbell' were initially propagated from larger, established plants. This gives a nice combination of newer, thinner canes and older, thicker canes. Being one of the earliest bamboos to shoot, they are currently growing new shoots as well. This current crop is only available in limited supplies so shop early for the best selection of plants. Spring is the perfect time to plant these beauties. Fargesia robusta 'Campbell' is currently available in 5gal sizes.
